We\u2019re flying from <a href=\"https:\/\/aleksblog.com\/en\/terceira-azores\/\">Terceira<\/a> to the neighboring island of S\u00e3o Jorge.<\/p>\n<p>The Terceira \u2013 S\u00e3o Jorge flight is operated by SATA, also known as Azores Airlines. Upon arrival, I immediately rented a car at the airport. I\u2019ll return it the next day at the port, from where I have a ferry to another island. In the island\u2019s capital, Velas, there are few hotels, mostly private rentals. Since I didn\u2019t plan to stay long on S\u00e3o Jorge, I booked <a href=\"https:\/\/booking.stay22.com\/privateperson\/YgKSGPha0e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tropical Fruit Garden<\/a> for one night\u2014a large house, half of which is rented out, while the owners live in the other half. Separate entrance, big kitchen-living room, and two bedrooms. Clean and cozy. Definitely enough space for about six people. And on S\u00e3o Jorge, we tried the buffet-style lunch for the first time. In <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/wKVQ1vPwHcc2FQw39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Urzelina<\/a> (a small town on the route), at the family restaurant Urzelina, we got an amazing buffet for just \u20ac12 per person\u2014fried and stewed beef, pork, chicken, vegetables, salads, rice, pasta. Plenty of everything. Plus, coffee was included in the price.<\/p>\n<p>We ended up so full that we didn\u2019t need dinner. In the evening, we just went to the store and stayed in at the Fruit Garden with wine, cheese, and fruit. So, there won\u2019t be as long a list of places on S\u00e3o Jorge as there was on Terceira. But don\u2019t think I was on a diet\u2014I made up for it on the other islands.<\/p>\n<p>I highly recommend stopping by any supermarket to buy the local hard cheese, Queijo S\u00e3o Jorge. It comes in different ages; I like the 24-month one, in black vacuum packaging, 300 grams. Costs around \u20ac9. It\u2019s sold in stores all over Portugal, not just in the Azores. There\u2019s also seven- and twelve-month aged cheese, which are good too, but the two-year one is just amazing\u2014the flavor really tingles on your tongue.<\/p>\n<p>Or an even better idea\u2014visit <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/tkyq8WEkrBrXA5cz9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a local cheese factory<\/a>. It\u2019s located in the central group of the Azores, next to the islands of Faial and Pico.<\/p>\n<p>The island has an elongated shape\u201454 km long and only 6 km wide. Around 9,000 people live on S\u00e3o Jorge. The two main towns are Velas and Calheta. The local population is mostly engaged in agriculture, fishing, and tourism. There are two ports on S\u00e3o Jorge, so keep that in mind when buying ferry tickets. Yes, that day was on S\u00e3o Jorge. The sun only came out closer to sunset, but the day was already lost. So, no chance for hiking. I was lucky enough to snap a few photos from the miradouros, though. Let me share what I saw and what else you can do on S\u00e3o Jorge in one or two days (I had done my homework).<\/p>\n<p>The central part of the island is a mountain ridge with the highest point reaching 1,053 meters\u2014Pico da Esperan\u00e7a. These mountain ranges and active volcanic processes created the faj\u00e3s and numerous volcanic craters. A road runs along the ridge, and from the airport you can drive straight to the southwestern tip of the island to the Topo Lighthouse (Farol do Topo). Along the way, you can stop at viewing points and try to catch a glimpse of something through the clouds.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to Terceira, the greenery on S\u00e3o Jorge is incredibly lush, almost like it\u2019s painted on. The climate here is truly unique. Coffee even grows on the island. You can visit a small <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/pYsYW6zxAchtDc4SA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">family plantation<\/a> in Faj\u00e3 dos Vimes, see the production\u2014berry picking, drying, roasting\u2014taste it, and buy a bag of beans to take home. Where else are you going to try coffee grown on a volcanic island? They are unique to the island and give it its distinctive look. There are more than 40 faj\u00e3s on S\u00e3o Jorge. Some of them, like Faj\u00e3 da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, can only be reached on foot or by boat. You can sort them by duration, difficulty, loop or one-way.<\/p>\n<p>I had planned for us to drive to Serra do Topo, where two trails start from <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/fuqYWm9yGphTzfhS7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this parking area<\/a>. One of them, <a href=\"https:\/\/trails.visitazores.com\/en\/trails-azores\/sao-jorge\/serra-do-topo-caldeira-do-santo-cristo-faja-dos-cubres\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PR01<\/a>, leads to Faj\u00e3 da Caldeira de Santo Cristo and then on to Faj\u00e3 dos Cubres. The trail is about 3 hours long, descending from the mountains and then following the ocean between the faj\u00e3s. I\u2019ve already mentioned the first faj\u00e3, Santo Cristo\u2014the one you can\u2019t reach by car.<\/p>\n<p>Between the two faj\u00e3s along the way there\u2019s another one, Faj\u00e3 do Belo. So, three faj\u00e3s in total. At the last one, Faj\u00e3 dos Cubres, there\u2019s a road, and that\u2019s where we had planned to have dinner and then ask for a taxi back to the Serra do Topo parking lot. But in the rain, I wasn\u2019t up for the hike. My paws were not ready for it\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If you take this trail, you\u2019ve got two assignments! First, in Santo Cristo, check out the early 19th-century church. Second, in one of the restaurants you should try Am\u00eaijoas \u00e0 Bulh\u00e3o Pato. These are white clams, similar to vongole. There\u2019s a funny bit of history here. Raimundo Ant\u00f3nio de Bulh\u00e3o Pato (or simply Bulh\u00e3o Pato) was a 19th-century Portuguese poet. The clam dish was first prepared by Jo\u00e3o da Mata, a chef at Lisbon\u2019s Central Hotel, and named after the poet, who was also a well-known gourmet. And \u201cpato\u201d in Portuguese means \u201cduck.\u201d Some people first think it\u2019s clams in duck broth. Nope, the recipe is very simple\u2014white wine, salt, pepper, cilantro, garlic, and clams.
