I had to look something up on the internet about Istanbul\u2019s museums. Turns out, what search engines show on the first pages is just awful.<\/p>\n

On Google, the first page is nothing but ads, and then mostly copycat \u201cattractions\u201d websites selling you a ticket plus a mandatory tour or an audio guide. On Yahoo, besides that, you also get pages churned out by copywriters with the dumbest articles like \u201c37 (49 or who can name more) must-visit museums in Istanbul.\u201d All mixed in with some random bloggers who, for 20 euros, are ready to send you a to-do checklist for Istanbul (I give it for free) or a Google Map with a route.<\/p>\n

To top it all off, it turns out the Turks have set completely outrageous prices for entrance tickets. The Louvre and Vatican Museums are 20 euros, while in Istanbul you have to pay 32 euros just for Dolmabahce alone. Since Turkey has permanent double-digit inflation, I\u2019ll list all prices in euros. But at the ticket counters they only accept cards or cash in lira.<\/p>\n

As a result, for those heading to Istanbul for the first time, it\u2019s completely unclear which museum to choose and where to buy tickets. And ideally without spending all your money.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll tell you which places you absolutely should go to, and which ones can wait until another time. And don\u2019t listen to anyone else.
