Right next to Topkapi.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Hagia Sophia<\/strong> \u2013 the symbol of Byzantium\u2019s Golden Age. Formerly the patriarchal Orthodox cathedral, converted into a mosque by the Ottomans in the 15th century, a museum from 1935, and since 2020 again a mosque. Officially today it\u2019s the Grand Mosque of Hagia Sophia. If Topkapi can still be skipped, Hagia Sophia is a must-see, even if churches aren\u2019t your thing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque)<\/strong> \u2013 the main mosque of Istanbul. Located right opposite Hagia Sophia. Entry is free.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>The muezzins of three mosques.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I highly recommend picking the right time and being on the square between the two now-mosques when the muezzins call to prayer (five times a day).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s incredible. The muezzins of Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet don\u2019t try to outsing each other\u2014they sing in duet. One starts, the other picks up, and they go back and forth. I don\u2019t know how it is now or if you\u2019ll be lucky, but sometimes a third voice joins\u2014the muezzin from Firuz Aga. When the three of them sing together, it\u2019s goosebumps all over, pure delight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/getyourguide.tpx.lu\/773CiQWj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Istanbul: Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Sultanahmet Tour<\/a> &#8211; join for best experience.<\/p>\n<p>Now\u2019s the perfect time for a cultural snack break. Here\u2019s what to try, and you can enjoy it right there:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Simit<\/strong> \u2013 a sesame bagel. It\u2019s right next to Hagia Sophia. Definitely go, you probably haven\u2019t seen anything like it anywhere else.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Theodosius Cistern<\/strong> \u2013 if you liked the Basilica, here\u2019s another one nearby, on the way to Constantine\u2019s Column. You\u2019ve got to see everything properly in the Sultanahmet area.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Hippodrome, Sultanahmet (Ahmediye)<\/strong> \u2013 the main tourist square in Istanbul. It consists of two parts: the first between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and the second is the Hippodrome itself.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It\u2019s called the Hippodrome because, for a long time, the Romans were here, and they needed purely Roman entertainment\u2014chariot races.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has survived:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Constantine\u2019s Column<\/strong> \u2013 a Roman triumphal column, waiting for your attention since the 4th century. Today, two lines run from Sirkeci \u2013 to Thessaloniki and Bucharest.<\/p>\n<p>So, what do the dances have to do with it\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Dervishes were wandering poor men allowed to live in tekkes, monastic dwellings. In the Beyo\u011flu district, there\u2019s the Galata Mevlevihanesi \u2013 a dervish museum. The dervishes have a ritual dance that allows them to enter a trance and connect with someone above (that\u2019s my interpretation). It has become a popular show even outside Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>The dance looks like this \u2013 for half an hour, the dervishes spin to music in one direction, gradually increasing the tempo, then switch to the other direction. It\u2019s a mystery how their heads don\u2019t get dizzy.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the whirling dervishes in two main places \u2013 at Galata Mevlevihanesi on Sundays at 5 and 7 pm (currently temporarily not held), or at Sirkeci Station almost every day. Nusret has a chain of meat restaurants in Istanbul. The one near the Grand Bazaar is the most convenient. Prices are above average. Steaks start at 300 lira. Dinner for two will cost about \u20ac120. But it\u2019s very tasty, plus the presentation is impressive. Worth going at least once. Fishermen stand by the shore and grill right on their boats. Bal\u0131k ekmek is grilled fish in a bread roll, cut in half. Be sure to get a small cup of pickles with it\u2014cabbage, cucumber.<\/p>\n<p>Under the bridge, in the first restaurants from the Emin\u00f6n\u00fc pier, they also make bal\u0131k ekmek, and it\u2019s a bit less crowded. More than 230,000 Istanbul residents live in Beyo\u011flu, which encompasses 45 neighborhoods. Karak\u00f6y is one of my favorite districts in Istanbul.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"29\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Cihangir District<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/zHMiGBMiSvXjnKa2A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Maps<\/a>) \u2013 the center of bohemian life. Expats, creative intellectuals, art gallery owners\u2014typical residents of this area. Be sure to stroll the streets and stop by a couple of caf\u00e9s to get a purely European city vibe.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Fish Market<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It\u2019s best to come in the first half of the day; the further from morning, the less fish remains. Life here buzzes around the clock. During the day, you can go shopping. In the evening, street musicians appear. All the evening and nightlife action happens around \u0130stiklal. Just turn onto any side street, and you\u2019ll find nightclubs or bars with restaurants immediately.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"33\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Taksim Square<\/strong> \u2013 the main square of Istanbul. For locals, this is the main square, not Sultanahmet.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Red Tram<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To get from Karak\u00f6y pier up to \u0130stiklal, you first take the funicular, then ride the red tram. The tram is more interesting to photograph from the side. Walk along \u0130stiklal itself.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"35\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Wet Burger<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>They say that after the nightclubs, Istanbul\u2019s steamed wet burger\u2014\u0131slak burger\u2014goes down well. A regular bun with a patty, slowly steaming in the display case while waiting for the buyer. They\u2019ve been making baklava since 1800, and the confectionery has operated in this location since 1970. Truly a huge selection. Divine, it just melts in your mouth. Istanbulites come here from all over the city. You can take it to go or enjoy it on the spot with tea. Open daily from 7 am to 11 pm.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"37\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Tea<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I used to think Turks only drink coffee, and of course, Turkish coffee. Not true. Tea! And it has to be in a special glass\u2014bardak (or as it\u2019s also called, armudi). Real brewed tea, like you only get in Istanbul. I don\u2019t know how they make it, but it tastes the same from street vendors for 1 lira or in a restaurant for 3. I even brought tea home, tried brewing it, even bought a bardak, but it\u2019s just not the same.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"38\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Caf\u00e9s and Graffiti in Karak\u00f6y<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Karak\u00f6y is currently going through gentrification and now competes heavily with \u0130stiklal for places to hang out in the evening. These aren\u2019t nightclubs, but cozy caf\u00e9s with cushions, wooden pallets, umbrellas, and lanterns between the buildings. Unbelievably cozy. From Karak\u00f6y pier, walk along the waterfront, watch the fishermen and cats, then head to G\u00fcll\u00fco\u011flu Confectionery. After that, turn onto the small parallel streets\u2014you\u2019ll first find graffiti, then pick a spot to your taste.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry, it\u2019s safe in the evening.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"39\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Museum of Modern Art<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Centre Pompidou, Erarta, Guggenheim \u2014 I love this kind of thing. Istanbul has several museums where you can explore modern art. I don\u2019t recommend the one in Arnavutk\u00f6y \u2014 it\u2019s a long way, has few exhibits, and the only noteworthy feature is the rooftop caf\u00e9 with a stunning view of the Bosphorus Bridge. I personally prefer this one \u2014 \u0130stanbul Modern Sanat M\u00fczesi.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"40\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Rahmi M. Ko\u00e7 Museum<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you have school-aged kids, this is simply the number one museum in Istanbul. And for men of all ages too. I\u2019ve been there twice, and it\u2019s pure delight. The boat departs from Emin\u00f6n\u00fc pier and sails to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, then turns back. Twenty-five minutes after departure, everyone falls asleep.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not insisting, but I prefer riding the Bosphorus on a regular ferry, the same one Istanbul residents use to travel between districts.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a suggested route: take the ferry from Kabata\u015f to \u00dcsk\u00fcdar, walk around there, and then return to Emin\u00f6n\u00fc. You\u2019ll probably even have different ferries. The \u00dcsk\u00fcdar\u2013Emin\u00f6n\u00fc route uses a bigger boat. Gorgeous views are guaranteed. At 238 meters, it features a viewing platform and, of course, a restaurant. You can see modern Istanbul from there\u2014beautiful during and after sunset. There\u2019s also a 4D cinema where you can \u201cfly\u201d over Istanbul. In short, the usual attractions for a metropolis with tall buildings. Sapphire has 64 floors in total. The first six floors are a shopping mall and food court; the rest are residential and office spaces.<\/p>\n<p>The viewing platform is open from 10 am to 10 pm (later makes little sense\u2014it\u2019s very dark). Tickets cost $7 and are sold on the first floor. They are different, and I recommend both. Dolmabah\u00e7e has luxurious interiors. The courtyard also has a great viewpoint\u2014don\u2019t miss it; it\u2019s often used for wedding photos.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"44\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Ortak\u00f6y Mosque<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>19th-century Ottoman Baroque. I recommend visiting after Dolmabah\u00e7e. Around Ortak\u00f6y, there\u2019s a recreational area with beautiful views of the Bosphorus Bridge and plenty of restaurants.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"45\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Kumpir<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To enjoy the Bosphorus and Ortak\u00f6y even more, start with a kumpir. This baked potato with fillings of your choice is traditionally eaten in the Ortak\u00f6y area. Yes, I\u2019m talking about food again. On a sunny day, it\u2019s a magnificent stroll, I promise. Fishermen, cats, seagulls, benches. Oh, almost forgot\u2014bring some buns to feed the seagulls!<\/p>\n<ol start=\"47\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Caf\u00e9 on Salacak Waterfront<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I really enjoy having tea with a view of the Maiden\u2019s Tower at one of the caf\u00e9s along the waterfront. The ones I like have cushions directly on the rocks instead of tables.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"48\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Mosques in \u00dcsk\u00fcdar<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>On the way back to the \u00dcsk\u00fcdar pier, you can visit two mosques:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>\u015eemsi Ahmet Pasha Mosque<\/strong>. \u201cUnexplained\u201d fact: no birds ever land on this mosque. Apparently, the architect designed it so that the wind rose of the Bosphorus sits above the roof, preventing birds from perching.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Mihrimah Sultan Mosque <\/strong>\u2014 named in honor of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->        <\/div>\n                    <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_column tb-column col4-2 tb_p16l824 last\">\n                    <!-- module text -->\n<div  class=\"module module-text tb_ubek824   \" data-lazy=\"1\">\n        <div  class=\"tb_text_wrap\">\n        <ol start=\"49\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Maiden\u2019s Tower<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>One of the postcard views of Istanbul. The history of the tower dates back to ancient times, though there\u2019s no exact record of when the first structures appeared here. The earliest written records are from the 5th century BC. I won\u2019t retell all of Wikipedia\u2014just know that today it\u2019s a museum and restaurant, accessible by boat. Boats depart every 15 minutes from Salacak pier to K\u0131z Kulesi. It\u2019s not far from \u00dcsk\u00fcdar pier, where you\u2019ll arrive from the European side of Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p>Entrance to the museum is 40 lira.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I prefer viewing the Maiden\u2019s Tower from the shore.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"50\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>\u00c7aml\u0131ca Mosque<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Appreciate the scale and grandeur of Turkey\u2019s largest mosque, opened in 2019. The mosque is 72 meters tall with six minarets\u2014two at 92 meters, the others at 107 meters. It holds 63,000 people. Open daily from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm. About a 30-minute bus ride from \u00dcsk\u00fcdar pier on bus 15C (Google Maps link).<\/p>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->        <\/div>\n                        <\/div>\n
