Tonle Sap is Cambodia\u2019s inland \u201csea\u201d. The name translates as \u201cgreat clean water\u201d, although because of the clay, the lake is actually very murky.<\/p>\n

People live not only along the shores of Tonle Sap but also right on the lake itself. Up to two million people inhabit floating houses and villages. They are born, live, and die on the water.<\/p>\n

Floating villages aren\u2019t rare in Southeast Asia \u2014 I\u2019ve seen similar ones in Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar. But only on Tonle Sap do they reach such a scale and such a closed, self-contained world. There are schools and churches on the water, floating gardens, post offices, and police stations. For many residents, there\u2019s simply no need to step onto the shore at all. In short \u2014 a full-fledged Waterworld.<\/p>\n

Ecosystem features<\/h2>\n

Tonle Sap Lake \u2014 the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Its uniqueness lies not only in its size but also in the remarkable ecosystem that sustains the life of countless floating villages.<\/p>\n

What makes Tonle Sap truly special is the seasonal change in its water level. During the rainy season in Southeast Asia (from June to October) and the snowmelt in Tibet, the water level in the Mekong River rises, pushing water upstream into the Tonle Sap River and filling the lake. The Mekong literally \u201cfeeds\u201d Tonle Sap.<\/p>\n

Because of this natural phenomenon, the water level in the lake rises nearly fourfold, and its area expands from 2,700 km\u00b2 to 16,000 km\u00b2. The surrounding land becomes flooded, and the lake turns into a vital source of fresh water.<\/p>\n

During the dry season (from November to April), the water level in the Mekong drops, and the flow of the Tonle Sap River reverses, sending water back from the lake into the Mekong and shrinking the lake once again.<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Life on the lake<\/h2>\n

The lives of the local people are adapted to the water. Houses, schools, shops, temples \u2014 all of these are found on platforms. You can see children going to school by boat, and shops and market stalls moving between houses. Residents of floating villages often keep small-scale farms: growing vegetables and fruits on floating platforms, and raising birds and animals.<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Do the houses really float?<\/h2>\n

Houses in the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake come in two types: pontoon-based and stilted, depending on the location and conditions.<\/p>\n

Most floating houses in villages like Chong Khneas or Kampong Khleang are built on pontoons \u2014 wooden or metal platforms that keep the houses afloat. These pontoons can be made from barrels, bamboo, or other materials that provide buoyancy. Such houses are easy to move, and you can often see them \u201cfloating\u201d across the lake depending on water levels and the needs of their owners.<\/p>\n

To prevent houses from drifting with the current or wind, they are tied to long poles driven into the lakebed. This allows the houses to stay in one place while moving up and down with the water level. In some cases, anchor systems or weighted structures are used to secure the house in place while still allowing slight movement.<\/p>\n

Another common type of structure in floating villages is houses on tall stilts. These can be found, for example, in Kampong Pluk. These houses stand on long wooden stilts that raise them several meters above the ground. During the dry season, they look like ordinary stilted houses, and during the rainy season, the water rises to floor level, with access to the houses by boat.<\/p>\n
