I just don\u2019t understand why this most luxurious palace in Europe isn\u2019t being promoted all over Portugal. I don\u2019t understand why there are hardly any visitors at the palace at all.<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/getyourguide.tpx.lu\/jRkh252q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jer\u00f3nimos Monastery<\/a>, there\u2019s an hour-long queue, while at the palace, which is almost nearby, there\u2019s no one. For the first half hour, we wandered through the incredible rooms completely alone. Then a few more visitors trickled in. Meanwhile, crowds of tourists are swarming Pena Palace in Sintra, even though there\u2019s nothing really inside and it\u2019s basically like Disneyland. And nobody wants to see the real royal interiors at Ajuda. Fire the head of tourism too!<\/p>\n<p>Believe me, I\u2019ve been to many former royal residences, but the Ajuda Palace is simply something absolutely stunning. Pure amazement. What follows is a lot of text and a few interior photos so that you\u2019ll definitely want to visit the Ajuda Palace.<\/p>\n<h2>Before Ajuda: where the royal palace stood and what happened to it<\/h2>\n<p>Before the Ajuda Palace existed, the Portuguese kings lived in the Ribeira Palace \u2013 a huge royal palace on the banks of the Tagus River. It stood where the Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio is today and was a symbol of Portugal\u2019s Golden Age.<\/p>\n<p>Everything changed one morning on November 1, 1755.<\/p>\n<p>On All Saints\u2019 Day, Lisbon experienced one of the most devastating earthquakes in European history. The strong tremors, estimated today at around 8.5\u20139 on the Richter scale, almost completely destroyed the city. Minutes after the main quake, a tsunami struck, followed by fires that burned for several days.<\/p>\n<p>The magnificent residence of the Portuguese monarchs was gone within hours. The area was considered unsafe: no one could rule out future earthquakes or tsunamis. So they chose the high hills of the Ajuda district.<\/p>\n<p>At first, a temporary wooden residence was built here. I\u2019m not very versed in religion, but it can generally be translated as Our Lady of Help.<\/p>\n<p>According to legend, shepherds found a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary in this area, which helped those who prayed to her. A chapel was built on the hill, and over time a settlement formed around it, which began to be called Ajuda. Unlike most European residences, the palace was built not in a time of stability, but during political crises, changing monarchs, and war.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, the palace was conceived as a gigantic building with huge wings and symmetrical fa\u00e7ades. But\u2026 in the early 19th century, when only the palace frame had been built, Napoleon came to Portugal. The royal family, led by Prince Regent Jo\u00e3o VI, fled to Brazil. Work at Ajuda ground to a halt for many years.<\/p>\n<p>When the royal family returned to Lisbon, the country was already different, the economy was weak, and the grand plans for the residence had to be revised.<\/p>\n<p>By the mid-19th century, the project was completely restarted in a style of strict Neoclassicism. Architects simplified the exterior, discarded most decorative elements, and focused on the interiors.<\/p>\n<p>King Lu\u00eds I and his wife Maria Pia of Savoy invested huge sums in decorating the rooms, furnishing collections, and decorative art.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the Ajuda Palace has remained completely untouched. Every interior and object is in its place. It\u2019s as if the owners had gone to their summer residence in Sintra and we just dropped in to visit.<\/p>\n<p>Just look at it! See this beauty \u2013 it\u2019s not some mass-produced item from China. It\u2019s all handcrafted. They were the ones who turned the palace into the main royal residence.<\/p>\n<p>They had five children. One son died in childhood. Two daughters were involved in charity and had no role in governance. And two sons \u2013 Carlos and Manuel.<\/p>\n<p>After Lu\u00eds I died in 1889, the throne passed to his eldest son, Carlos I. His reign ended tragically: in 1908, he was assassinated along with his son Lu\u00eds Filipe. Following these events, his younger brother Manuel II ascended the throne, becoming the last king of Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>In 1910, the republic overthrew the monarchy, and Manuel II emigrated to the United Kingdom, while the palace ceased to be a royal residence. Manuel II died in 1932 at the age of 43.
